The new Minister for Gender, Jean Sendeza today visited NGORA Secretariat to appreciate the work being done at the Authority.

Sendeza who was taken on a tour of the premises, was briefed on the work that NGORA does to ensure that the NGO sector is accountable, transparent and benefits the local Malawian.

Speaking during her briefing session Sendeza said that she was appreciative of the role that NGORA plays whilst assuring the Authority of her support in its work.

“NGORA has a big task to regulate NGO’s in the country. I am very appreciative of the role that you play to ensure that NGO work benefits the local Malawian.

I want us to interact more, and I am therefore looking forward to working with you. Know that my office is always open, feel free to come to me for any issues that you have to ensure that Malawi has a vibrant NGO sector,” she said.

NGORA CEO Voice Mhone informed the Minister that the mandate of the Authority is to register and regulate NGOs. He further explained that NGORA defines an NGO as an organization that collects money on behalf of Malawians.

“Our mandate is to register and regulate NGOs. Any entity operating as an NGO without being registered by us is doing so illegally and can be brought to task,” said Mhone.

Currently, NGORA has 920 registered NGOs in its database.
